The MillBridge Marlins Swim Team was formed in May of 2014 by Nina McPherson, a resident who wanted to share her love of swimming with other families in MillBridge. With the help of Landeavor, the developer of MillBridge, the Marlins began as a “mock” team with 48 swimmers. In the spring of 2015, the Marlins joined the Greater Charlotte Swim League in Division 6. In July of 2016, in just their second year in the GCSL, the Marlins won the Division 6 Championship Meet! 2017 will be the Marlin’s third year in the league with an impressive 110 swimmers, ages 4-16, and we’re proud to offer this fun, memorable summer experience to the families of MillBridge!
Jen Bass / Team Manager
Jen Bass has been part of the Millbridge Marlins for the past two years. This is her second year helping with the overall organization of the team. Jen has one Millbridge Marlin on the team. Jen does not come from a swimming background, but has a new found passion for the sport. Her job has allowed her to cover several of the Olympic Games which helped to realize this passion. She was one of the first journalists to chat with Michael Phelps after her broke the all time medal record during the Bejing Games. She is one of our biggest and loudest cheerleaders at the meets. She just loves watching these kids grow and become stronger in the pool.
Deanna Sherrill / USA Stroke and Turn Judge/ Parent Coordinator
Deanna Sherrill has been part of the Millbridge Marlins for the past three years. Three of her children have been on the team in the past and their love for swimming has grown. This is a now a year round sport for her daughter Raegan and because of that she has invested more time in learning the rules and regulations that pertain to swimming. Deanna is a great help to the team and her training is a huge asset. She will help these kids become better swimmers. She is ready to see where season 4 takes us all!
Nina McPherson / Head Coach
Nina McPherson is a former high school, college and USA competitive swimmer, swim instructor and coach – first with the New Hartford Knights Swim Team and Woodberry Hills Swim Club in upstate New York, and later with the MillBridge Marlins and the Cuthbertson Middle School Cavaliers. She’s a certified lifeguard and is also certified in CPR and First Aid. Having grown up with a neighborhood summer swim team, it was her dream to start a team here in MillBridge when her and her husband, Tim, and their three children (all swimmers!) moved to the community in 2011. Her passion for swimming and love of teaching have kept her involved with the sport for so many years!
Tracy St. Hilaire / Assistant Coach
Tracy St. Hilaire learned to swim before she could walk. Her love of the water continued into her teen years where she participated on her school swim team. To this day she feels almost as much at home in the water as she does on land. Determined to instill this love of the water in her own children, she taught them to swim at an early age and was eager to jump in feet first when Nina first started the Millbridge Team back in 2014. Since that time, Tracy has volunteered as the team’s unofficial assistant coach and head clerk of course whenever her busy teacher schedule allowed. This year she is looking forward to working with the youths of Millbridge in a more official capacity as assistant coach so that they, too, can fall in love with swimming and come away confident in the water.
